The Midnight Hour and Me

“Who’s idea was this anyway?”
It’s pretty safe to say that if it’s not Positron’s fault… it’s mine.

Hi. I don’t think we’ve been formally introduced. I’m Joe Morrissey, some call me Hero 1. I’m a senior designer and the lead writer on City of Heroes. I’ve been on the team just over a year now, coming on during the craziness of Issue 10, helping guide the vision of Issue 11 and now laying the foundation for what is issue 12, “The Midnight Hour”. But before I get into that, let me give you a little background about myself.

I’ve been a writer/designer for about 10 years now, starting at Blizzard North working on Diablo II, the expansion and anything else us “Northies” thought was a good idea at the time. From there I went over to Backbone and learned how to roll up my sleeves and get down and dirty in design. I worked on a number of handheld games the highlight of those being Death Jr. 2. About a year ago, my wife and I found out we were going to have our first kid and that meant a couple lifestyle changes needed to occur. The main one being a job much closer to home. I applied at Cryptic Studios and apparently I “interviewed well”, a fact Positron is quick to point out anytime that I make his life difficult. Read more…

Tribute game novel distraction

WHEN it was all done, everyone was smiling. Except those who wanted to believe that Saturday night’s match between Victoria and the Dream Team would present an inarguable case for the return of representative football.

Victorian captain Jonathan Brown was beaming. He led his state to a 17-point victory and played out the game, which was important for his well-being on more than one front given the view his Brisbane coach, Leigh Matthews, held about his participation.

Brendan Fevola was elated with his six-goal performance, for which he received the Allen Aylett medal, a nod of respect that may prove doubly rewarding for someone who has often resorted to foolery to subdue his self-doubts. Read more…

The popularity of Rice Burners

I’m not exactly sure how to open this, so I’m just going to open it this way - Rice burners, why? Why have they become so popular over the years? Sure, you can beef up a cute little escort and make it pop 130 mph in a few seconds, but that costs a little more money than it’s worth. Not only that - They’re ugly as hell! Ok, so there are a few of them that make some sense, and that actually have style.. But when you have a movie dedicated to them, making them seem like something they’re really not, it tends to become a tad bit irritating.

Now, I know I may get some random complaints about the way I feel about this, but I do find it slightly annoying that The Fast and the Furious made CGI scenes trying to make these little cars look like big badass monsters. When, in fact, they’re far from it. The only car that was badass… Happened to be totaled in the ending scene. Why? I think I almost cried, the one thing that made that movie good, was wrecked, completely. Then he hopped into his little rich car and drove away. Not happening. Sure, still a nice car, but have you got a hundred thousand, up to millions in your pocket to get that car? No way in hell can someone undercover make that much money. Realism is needed, at least a little, but this is taken a little too far. Read more…
